About Smithsburg Maryland
Located just west of presidential retreat Camp David and close to the former Fort Ritchie army base, Smithsburg is a town located in the heart of Washington County, Maryland. As of 2010, there were 2,975 residents according to the census. Founded by Christopher "Stuffle" Smith in 1813, Smithburg's development evolved with the influence of migration paths, the arrival of the railroad, and technological advances in agriculture. It acted as a hospital town in 1862 during the American Civil War and most of its existing village was built by the end of 1923. To date, most of Smithsburg looks relatively the same as it did at the turn of the century-lush with mid 19th and early 20th Century architectural character. Students living in Smithsburg attend its three main schools: Smithsburg Elementary School, Smithsburg Middle School, and Smithsburg High School. The town also hosts a handful of annual events, including Smithsburg Pride Days in May, the Smithsburg Carnival at the end of June, the Steam and Craft Show in September, and the Smithburg Hometown Christmas in December.
